Chapter Six

When Debbie finally stirred awake in the morning, she found Dallas brewing some coffee in the room and Ricky munching on some dry dog food. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. “What time is it?”

“It's just after nine. I woke up around seven because this little booger was licking my face. I ran out to the Five Dollar and Under store and bought him some kibble and some food and water bowls. I even found him a leash and a collar for two bucks each.”

Debbie smiled. “Well, well. And I thought you didn't like him.”

“Maybe he's growing on me. I made you a cup of coffee.”

Debbie inhaled deeply. “I can smell it. I'll have mine with creamer and sweetener. No sugar.”

Dallas handed Debbie a cup of coffee, then turned on the television to flip through the channels. Dallas found a local channel that was advertising a corn maze.

“Are you thinking what I'm thinking?” asked Dallas with a wicked smirk.

Debbie was puzzled. “No, what are you thinking?”

Dallas grinned. “I'm thinking we can check out early and head on over to the corn maze.” She sipped on her cup of coffee.

“What about Ricky?”

“I'm sure they won't mind him being with us. We'll keep him on a leash.”

“Okay, let me get a quick shower before we head out.” Debbie jumped out of bed and sauntered over to the bathroom. The shower head's spraying water was heard seconds later as she turned on the water.

Dallas packed away her toiletries and dirty clothes and left the bags on the bed.

Ricky ran around her legs happily as he followed her to and fro. “Sit!” she commanded as she pointed down with her pointer finger.

Ricky cocked his head to the side and watched her. She wondered what he was thinking because it clearly wasn't to sit down. He avoided her command and instead began panting. “Roll over!” she commanded, twirling her finger around in a circle. To Dallas's surprise, Ricky sat down. She chuckled. “Pretty close there. Maybe you'll get the hang of this eventually.”

“Are you being mean to my dog!?” she heard Debbie call out from the open door to the bathroom.

“I thought you said he was our dog,” said Dallas matter of factly. She heard no response. “Let's try this again. Sit!” She once again pointed down with her finger. Ricky stared at her curiously, then rolled over. Dallas started laughing. Even though he confused the two commands, she praised him. “Good boy! Good boy!” She dug through the pizza box and gave him a piece of pepperoni.

“What are you doing to my dog?” asked Debbie as she stood in the doorway drying off her hair with a towel.

Dallas nearly jumped in the air. “You scared me! Why'd you sneak up on me like that?”

“Because I wanted to see what you were doing to Ricky.” Debbie glanced down at Ricky. “Is she being mean to you?” she asked, directing her question to the Chihuahua. He only watched her in confusion.

“Check this out, honey.
